Eclipses of a Counter Future

Audiovisual Manifestation & Collective Lexicon

How do we unlearn the vocabularies of the past to build the futures we need?

Born from a two-year collaborative process within the international project Smashing Wor(l)ds: Cultural Practices for re/Imagining & un/Learning Vocabularies, this piece serves as a visual manifestation of a shared lexicon. Following a series of summer academies, workshops, and performative labs, Maanila de Moraes was commissioned to interpret a set of core keywords—concepts such as Collective Care, Decolonizing the Mind, and Visionary Activism—that emerged from the collective research.

Maanila de Moraes’s visualization explores these themes through a lens of cosmic transition and ritualistic performance, seeking to bridge the gap between "Thinking" and "Feeling." In her practice, de Moraes utilizes the aesthetics of the glitch and digital deconstruction to rupture the rigidity of institutional spaces.

In this work, she interprets these collective "words" as "worlds." Using experimental imagery and a deconstructive aesthetic, de Moraes aims to smash existing hegemonic narratives to make room for a counter-future built on community power and the radical imagination. It is an exploration of how we can manifest a future that centers privilege-sharing and treats life as an art practice.
Eclipses of a Counter Future is more than a summary; it is an invitation to acknowledge language as a site of struggle.
"There is no future without the un/learning of the past."
